Mere sugary white fiction or pure science?
Myth #1: Homeopathy cures only chronic illnesses.
Fact: Homeopathy cures both chronic and acute ailments. In fact, an acute disease becomes chronic only when its symptoms are allowed to persist. In fact, at MindHeal Homeopathy, we have successfully treated acute illnesses like colds, infections, fevers and diarrhoea, which comprise 20 per cent of our cases.
Myth #2: Homeopathy is slow to act.
Fact: Homeopathy acts quickly in acute illnesses but it takes a little longer to effect a cure in chronic ailments such as asthma, bronchitis, arthritis, kidney failure, osteoporosis, high cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, etc. The medicines start working immediately but the time taken to heal depends on the individual’s immune system, stress factors, lifestyle, habits and personality.
Myth #3: Homeopathy is mere placebo effect.
Fact: In India at least, homeopathic medicines undergo clinical trials conducted by the Central Council for Research in Homeopathy, the regulatory body for homeopathic practices. Also, since homeopathic medicines are effective with infants and animals, the assumption that they are placebos is false.
How Homeopathy Works: I
Myth #4: Homeopathic medicines contain steroids.
Fact: Homeopathic medicines are made of natural ingredients such as plants, animal products, naturally occurring elements, compounds and minerals etc. In fact, remedies prepared from plants usually contain ALKALOIDS, which are effective and produce no side-effects (such as excessive body hair, backache, etc).
Myth #5: Homeopathic medicines are unsafe for pregnant women.
Fact: Homeopathy is the ideal medicine for pregnant women. Where allopathic drugs can have possible side-effects on both mother and child, homeopathic remedies are ideal to address problems like nausea, anaemia, backache, cramps, morning sickness, heartburn, diarrhoea, blood pressure, emotional distress, etc, which usually occur during pregnancy. Also, since only tiny amounts of active ingredients are used, homeopathic medicines are safe for the growing baby.
Myth #6: Homeopathy is not advisable for treating cancers, especially as a supplement to radiation and chemotherapy.
Fact: Homeopathy has proved successful in curing even the most severe cases of cancer because it identifies the root cause. What makes it so effective for a disease like this is that remedies are customised; they ease pain, fear of death and address other psychological issues; and they also prevent relapse.
Myth #7: Antibiotics are the most effective treatment for infection.
Fact: Antibiotics merely suppress infection, without identifying the cause. They don’t kill the microbes that cause disease; they only suppress symptoms. That is why the disease resurfaces as another ailment. Also, antibiotics have side-effects such as a stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions, diarrhoea, etc. Homeopathy addresses the root of disease without producing any side-effects. It strengthens the immune system and thus prevents recurrence of all types of disease.
Myth #8: A Homeopath is a ‘home-grown doctor’ with no medical background.
Fact: Homeopathy is a full-fledged medical science which requires rigorous study. In India, homeopathy is a five-and-a-half-year course inclusive of a year-long internship. The course covers the same subjects as an allopathy course, in addition to homeopathic science and philosophy. A Master’s degree is awarded after a three-year course.
Myth #9: Homeopathic medicines produce side-effects.
Fact: In some cases, there may be slight aggravation of symptoms due to an increase in the potency of the remedies. This is merely an indication that the immune system is growing stronger. Also, the symptoms subside as the potency is reduced. Also, this takes place only in some cases. Whether symptoms get aggravated depends on the patient’s constitution.
Myth #10: Foods like onion, garlic, tea and coffee must be avoided during homeopathic treatment
Fact: Patients are advised to abstain from food and beverages 15 minutes before and after taking homeopathic remedies. Also, if there is an aftertaste of the abovementioned foods and beverages, all you need to do is rinse your mouth. There are no other dietary restrictions but this may vary from one homeopath to another.
Myth #11: Homeopathy does not prescribe any diagnostic tests.
Fact: Homeopaths may require patients to perform conventional diagnostic tests to assess the exact nature of the ailment and / its severity. This is usually the case when the disease is serious.
Myth #12: Homeopathic remedies are a bunch of sugar pills.
Fact: These small, white sugar pills are just the medium for the ‘real’ medicine, which is dissolved in them. In fact, there are around 3,000 different concoctions. The homeopath selects one of these according to the case.
Myth #13: Homeopathic ‘sugar pills’ should not be prescribed for diabetics.
Fact: These sweet, white pills are made of lactose not glucose. Also, the quantity is too small to affect blood sugar levels. And don’t forget, homeopathy provides excellent remedies for diabetes as well. They can coax pancreatic cells to produce insulin on their own.
